Earth Hour is over, but our competition is still running hot!

The lights were switched out all over the world on Saturday night as Earth Hour arrived. Earth Hour completed its journey across more than 6,525 cities and towns in 150 countries making it the largest voluntary action for the environment since 2009!

Celebrities such as Yoko Ono, Gisele Bundchen and Gael Garcia Bernal tweeted their enthusiasm of the event and people crowded around popular landmarks to watch their lights go out. The Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and Times Square (New York), Eiffel Tower (Paris), Patronas Twin Towers (Malaysia), Acropolis (Greece), Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), Brandenburg Gate (Berlin), Niagara Falls (Canada/USA), Great Wall of China (China), Royal Opera House (Oman), India Gate (New Delhi) and Sydney Harbor Bridge to name a few all switched out their lights for the sixty minutes.

Within Rentini, employees observed the hour by unplugging electrical appliances, watching the Empire State Building go dark, having a candle light dinner and taking evening strolls around Manhattan. Although we all enjoyed participating in Earth Hour we acknowledge it’s important to continue taking measures to help the planet and the environment. Going beyond the hour by switching appliances off at the wall and turning off lights when you leave a room.

For the past four years The Philippines has topped the rest of the world in participation levels, continuously saving large amounts of electricity. Over the weekend, they managed to beat their own record saving 362 MWh. Oman’s Environment Society came forward to say they also saved much more than the previous year with a saving of 53,430 KW.

If you read our blog post yesterday you will know Earth Hour is upon us.

There’s just a week and a half to go until 8.30pm on March 31^st when we switch out the lights for sixty minutes. We want to remind you just how important sustainability is to help protect our planet.

We all want to enjoy the great outdoors and the natural wonders our planet has to offer for many years to come. Therefore it’s our responsibility to do what we can to halt global warming.
